Wakefield Song Lyrics

Wakefield Music

When we first made the Wakefield album and started putting the graphics together, we considered including the song lyrics for each song, but there was no space on the front or back covers, and we didn't think it was practical to make a fold out cover or add an additional sheet, especially considering that no one felt like our lyrics were anything special.  Still, I always thought it was fun to read the lyrics to the songs that I liked, while listening to the song.  So, for those of you that would like to do the same, I have included the lyrics to the songs I wrote.  Perhaps I can talk Geoff into jotting his down as well.  If so, I will include them as I receive them.
Animals
Sitting on a sunny afternoon, mommy's bringing something home to you very soon
Coming in a little box you see, staring through a crack  at you, you're pleased, an animal
Watching it at play day after day, thinking now of what some people say it's really true, he looks like you
And now people you thought you knew, are starting to remind you, of some furry little animal, now you're thinking, now you see
We're Animals,  Yes we're Animals, we're all Animals, Oh Oh Animals

Whose that sitting in that chair by you, a funny little chimpanzee it's true oh Jimmy dear, you're mommy's here
Whose that boxing in that ring with you, a hopping punching kangaroo, I'm afraid it's true, Donnie it's you
And now it's time to look around, tell your buddy what you've found, all shapes and sizes too, animals staring at you
They're Animals, Yes they're Animals, They're all Animals, Oh Oh Animals

And now it's time to look around, tell your buddy what you've found, all shapes and sizes too, animals staring at you
They're Animals, Yes they're Animals, They're all Animals, Oh Oh Animals
Yes you're all crazy...Oh Oh Animals
Yes not just lazy...Oh Oh Animals
Just like Dick Tracy...Oh Oh Animals
Pick one up at Macy's...Oh Oh Animals,  Oh Oh Animals, Oh Oh Animal, Animals

We played at a club in SF called the "Main Gate".  We played there 3 months straight, 5 nights a week.  We felt like it would be difficult to keep people entertained night after night, so we began working on various aspects of our show that were meant to make it fun and a new experience each night.  These stage "antics" later defined Wakefield peformances as we toured, as we became more than just good music, but also became something to come and watch, with audiences never knowing what was going to happen night after night.

One of the things we did, was play film clips along with certain songs, using an actual film projector and screen.  This is commonplace today, but was very unique in the late 70's and early 80's...especially for a bar band.  I worked in the audio/visual department at Augustana College during my school years, and bought an old 16mm film projector.  We had boxes of old films.  We put a film together that was used for a sequence of songs throughout the night.  The projector was turned on remotely, and as long as we played the songs in the proper order, they could be played at any time.  We had an old film clip of a zookeeper playing with various animals.  It was in the middle of our film, but we didn't have any song for it.  I sat down one afternoon and wrote "Animals" specifically to be used with the film.  I played on the idea that pets resemble their owners.  Many years later, it was chosen to be on the album due to its uniqueness.
